U.S.A.! U.S.A.! vol. 245

Trump is trying to ban this ad about his coronavirus response so please don't share it

U.S.A.! U.S.A.! vol. 244

Followers of the QAnon conspiracy theory, a labyrinthine belief system that posits that President Trump is waging a secret war against a global criminal organization, have spent much of the COVID-19 outbreak struggling to fit the disease into their narratives. At first, they theorized the virus was a bioweapon created by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. Then, following remarks last month from radio host Rush Limbaugh, a sizable contingent suggested that the virus was actually a deep state hoax meant to damage Trump politically.

In recent days, their baseless speculations have settled on Fauci. QAnon-supporting radio host Bill Mitchell has been the biggest promoter of the latest theory. For weeks, Mitchell has been spinning a conspiracy theory that Fauci is a “Democrat plant" and nicknamed him “Dr. #FearPorn.” Mitchell’s first tweets about Fauci date back to March 3, when Fauci first suggested the closure of schools and businesses.

“Sorry President Trump, but replace this crackpot,” Mitchell tweeted. Several minutes later, Mitchell tweeted about Fauci again, “Have you ever seen the market drop 1000 points AFTER a 50 basis point Fed cut? That's #FearPorn. Thanks Dr. Anthony Fauci.”

Sovereign citizens believe in an elaborate set of legal theories that holds that American citizens can unilaterally use certain code phrases to proclaim that the United States government has no jurisdiction over them — and thus get out of hot water with the justice system. While these ideas have no actual force in law, a series of Facebook groups and YouTube personalities have promoted sovereign citizen theories to parents desperate to regain custody of their children, drawing them into the fringe movement. The FBI considers sovereign citizens a potential source of domestic terrorism. A 2018 Southern Poverty Law Center report found that sovereign citizens had killed six law enforcement officials since 2005.

The doc’s title plays on a nickname Western media outlets bestowed on Nabwana: “the African Tarantino,” presumably for the blood-splattered outrageousness of his cinematic vision. Not that Tarantino nor Spielberg nor the other Hollywood directors Nabwana has been compared to ever had a script eaten by termites or lost a film during a power outage-induced computer crash. None have ever been confined to a $200 budget yet turned in the mind-melting mayhem of the Captain Alex trailer alone. And certainly none ever turned their DIY movie studio, a collection of small brick buildings with tin roofs, into a thriving community center that not only produces movies, but steadfastly trains the next generation of Ugandan moviemakers (and martial artists) as well—all through sheer indefatigability.

Taken together, this is a massive failure in leadership that stems from a massive defect in character. Trump is such a habitual liar that he is incapable of being honest, even when being honest would serve his interests. He is so impulsive, shortsighted, and undisciplined that he is unable to plan or even think beyond the moment. He is such a divisive and polarizing figure that he long ago lost the ability to unite the nation under any circumstances and for any cause. And he is so narcissistic and unreflective that he is completely incapable of learning from his mistakes. The president’s disordered personality makes him as ill-equipped to deal with a crisis as any president has ever been. With few exceptions, what Trump has said is not just useless; it is downright injurious.
The nation is recognizing this, treating him as a bystander “as school superintendents, sports commissioners, college presidents, governors and business owners across the country take it upon themselves to shut down much of American life without clear guidance from the president,” in the words of Peter Baker and Maggie Haberman of The New York Times.
Donald Trump is shrinking before our eyes.

The Trump Presidency Is Over

U.S.A.! U.S.A.! vol. 237

More people will get sick because of his presidency than if somebody else were in charge. More people will suffer the financial hardship of sickness because of his presidency than if somebody else were in charge. The medical crisis will arrive faster and last longer than if somebody else were in charge. So, too, the economic crisis. More people will lose their jobs than if somebody else were in charge. More businesses will be pushed into bankruptcy than if somebody else were in charge. More savers will lose more savings than if somebody else were in charge. The damage to America’s global leadership will be greater than if somebody else were in charge.

There is always something malign in Trump’s incompetence. He has no care or concern for others; he cannot absorb the trouble and suffering of others as real. He monotones his way through words of love and compassion, but those words plainly have no content or meaning for him. The only thing that is real is his squalid vanity. This virus threatens to pierce that vanity, so he denied it as long as he could. What he refuses to acknowledge cannot be real, can it?
And even now that he has acknowledged the crisis, he still cannot act, because he does not know what to do. His only goal now is to shove blame onto others. Americans have to face the fact that in the grip of this pandemic, the Oval Office is for all practical purposes as empty as the glazed eyes of the man who spoke from that office tonight.

The unprecedented strike came amid a growing number of femicides, or hate killings of women. Two high-profile cases last month — a woman who was disemboweled by her partner with a kitchen knife and a seven-year-old girl who was kidnapped and killed — outraged Mexican women, prompting an extraordinary day of reckoning for the country of 120 million people.

Femicides rose nearly 10% between 2018 and 2019, according to government data. Growing anger among women hit a peak last month, after photographs of Ingrid Escamilla’s mutilated body were splashed on tabloid covers. Escamilla, 25, had been skinned by the man she lived with. Days later, the body of Fátima Aldrighett, 7, was discovered inside a plastic bag. She had been abducted outside her school, sexually assaulted and killed.

look i get it; the choices fucking suck, people are shit, life is an irritant, and it's a drag being told what to do and how to do it. but this is all we got for the time being. it's frustratingly imperfect and will more than likely become so leaden from pedantic compromises that it will be the policy outcome equivalent of a ruined orgasm, but this fuck-a-duck has to cunting go.

you’ll want to get acquainted with Danzig. But you don’t need to be acquainted with his music, really - it doesn't really factor into the movie. Instead, focus on Danzig the weird celebrity: the Danzig who maintains steadfast self-seriousness even as he descends into what for anyone else would be self-parody; the Danzig who believes anything he does is revolutionary and system-bucking simply because he’s doing it; the Danzig who is probably enraged that the horror/punk/metal scene has been mainstreamed enormously since he arrived on it. You have to realise Danzig considers Verotika to be ingenious and radical, because the actual movie is pretty tame - which only makes it funnier. Though its problems are present in other films, only an outpouring of Danzig's id could have made the highly specific film that is Verotika.
